MARTON CONCLUDES
KEEN RACING TAME FOX’S COME BACK DEAD HEAT IN THE SPRINT The spring meeting of the Marton i Jockey Club was brought to a conclusion at Marton Junction on Saturday, the racing being keen and interesting, despite the paucity of runners in some of the events. There was only a moderate attendance, and this was reduced still further after the fourth race, when there was an exodus to Palmerston North to see the Ranfurly Shield game. The going was still holding, but a bit better than on the opening day. The totaliso.tor handled £13,525, making a total for the two davs of £30,060, against £32,291 twelve month ago. The decrease for the two days was £2,231* Notes on the racing and details of results follow: HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN Fee Simple was backed as if the race was all over in the Novice Stakes, Acre gelding being entrusted with £493, against £325 on Helotis and £4O on the eventual winner, The Raider. Trouble was left at the start, Helotis leading out from The Raider, Taurimu, Facia and Mint Belle. Just after passing the half-mile The Raider went to the front, showing the way into the straight to Helotis and Fee Simple, both close up, with Taurimu, Mint Belle, Maui, Facia and Chrissarto strung out. The Raider went away in the home stretch to win comfortably by three lengths from Fee Simple, who was three parts of a length in advance of Helotis. Taurimu was fourth and Mint Belle, Maui, Chrissarto, Facia and Trouble following. HURDLES TO HANGAWERA Backers were unlucky in not collecting first dividend off a hot favourite in Peshwa in the Hack Hurdles. The first day's winner carried £4Ol, Arataura £282, Hangawera £203 and Red Fuchsia £ 196. Arataura led past the stands from Hangawera, Peshwa, Break o’ Day, Red Fuchsia and Ramblin’ Kid, with Mountain Top tailed off.. There was no change along the back except that Mountain Top had made up some of his leeway. Arataura led into the straight from Hangawera, Peshwa and Mountain Top, and there was very little between the three first-named at the last fence. Arataura was first beaten, and Hangawera and Peshwa fought out a hard finish, the latter getting a head decision. Arataura was three parts of a length away third, and then came Mountain Top, Red Fuchsia, Ramblin' Kid and Break o’ Day. A USEFUL HACK
The defection of Bank Note and Komak left four runners in the Wairoma Hack Handicap, Town Bird £549 and Volplane £294 carrying most money in a poor betting race. A walk-in start saw the favourite go to the front from Tanagra, Volplane and Kalos. Crossing the top Town Bird was joined by Tanagra, and the outsider of the field had headed Town
Bird at the turn for home, with Kalos moving up. The favourite gave in quickly, and it was left to Kalos to chase Tanagra to the judge, three lengths separating them. Tuwn Bird was six lengths off, half a length in front of Volplane, who failed to show his first day’s dash. AT HOME IN THE MUD Anolo was the only withdrawal from the Heaton Park Handicap, Mint Leaf £424, Nukumai £419, Tresham £353, and Te Monanui £2OB were best supported, the eventual winner, Tame Fox, despite his good finish on the first day, being entrusted with £137. Leading into the back stretch Star Area made play from Eden Hall, Tame Fox, Te Monanui, Nukumai, Tresham, Mount Marta, Mint Leaf and Brigadier Bill. At the four furlor.gs Star Area was still in charge, closely pursued by Eden Hall, Tame Fox, Mint Leaf and Tresham, .with Brigadier Bill, Te Monanui, Nukumai and Mount Marta following. Tame Fox moved up crossing the top, and Mint Leaf went with him, there being very little separating them at the home turn, next in oi’der being Tresham, Eden Hall, Te Monanui, Brigadier Bill and Star Area, with Nukumai last. The favourite was beaten a furlong from home, and it was left to Tresham to challenge Tame Fox, a line duel between the pair resulting in a head victory for Tame Fox. Mint Leaf was a couple of lengths away, and then came Brigadier Bill and Te Monanui. After a big gap were Mount Marta, Eden Hall, Star Area and Nukumai. FALLS IN STEEPLECHASE The Hack Steeplechase was a contest full of incident, five out of seven starters failing to complete the course, although one of them was remounted and came home to get third money. Jovial £383. Handy £350 and Hokioi £269 were the best supported, The Curragli being entrusted with £174. At the first fence, the double, Taitaiata fell, and Hokioi crashed at the second of this double. Handy, Ruby Ring and Oneroa led for the first circuit, the first of the double seeing Ruby Ring go out. Before this Jovial fell at the half-mile. The Curragh took charge at the stands, and drew out along the back from Oneroa, Handy falling at the four furlongs, and he went on to win easily by 20 lengths Handy completed the course later. AMATEUR RIDERS’ RACE Backers did well in the Ladies’ Bracelet, Koauau £434, Tintoretto £4lO, Radiate £294 and Lady Faye £294 carrying most money, and they were the first four home. Radiate, Lady Faye, Hautawa, Tintoretto and Koauau was the order going out of the straight, but crossing the top Tintoretto went to the front, piloting Lady Faye, Koauau, Radiate and Risk into the straight. Tintoretto easily held his own from this on, winning from Koauau by a length and a-half with Radiate two lengths back. Lady Faye and Risk were next. FAVOURITE AND OUTSIDER Of the four runners in the Telegraph Handicap, Huikai .£660 and Royal
