BIG HOUSE DESTROYED
GREAT SOUTH ROAD FIRE FLAMES SEEN FOR MILES A large, unoccupied house at the corner of Garland Street and Groat South Road was totally destroyed by tire early yesterday morning:. The house had evidently been burning some time when the Ellerslie Fire Brigade was called out shortly after 3 o’clock, also the Remuera, One Tree Hill and Onehunga Brigades were called out. but nothing could be done to save the building. Fanned by a strong wind the flames attacked an adjoining house, but the efforts of the four brigades were sufficient to prevent the blaze from spreading. About 200 people assembled at the fire, while over 30 cars were parked on the road near by. The glare from the flames was visible for miles arouml. the house having been built on rising ground.
The house, a single-storied building of ten rooms, has been built for about 30 years. It was insured for £2.000 in the South British Insurance Company’s office. It was being renovated after being used for flats, and had been empty for only a few weeks. Tinowner, Mr. J. B. King, of Brightside Road, Epsom, estimates his loss at
