COMPETITIONS END FESTIVAL OF ARTS As far as the actual judging is con- j cerned the Auckland Competitions have now concluded, the final classes being j adjudicated last evening. The standard, particularly in the elocutionary and dancing sections, was good, and a varied and very enjoyable j programme resulted. A matinee performance of leading performers will be given in the Tow n Hall this afternoon, and a grand demonstration concert this evening. Additional demonstration concerts will be j given at the Town Hall on Monday j and Tuesday. Yesterday’s results are as follow: — . CHARACTER DIALOGUE Two or Three Competitors, Under 16 Own Selection Aliss Doreen Saunders and Alaster Kenneth Warburton, 107 points . . 1 Misses Gladys Cain and Olga Elsmore, 103 points • • - • • Alisses Frances Phillipps and Nancy Kay-Stratton. 101 points u The judge said the performers gave excellent selections, which were well carried out. The acting and stagecraft were very good. HUMOROUS RECITATION WITH MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT Ladies or Gentlemen Own Selection Aliss Doreen Saunders, Auckland, 9S points • • ; • y 1 Aliss Phyllis Alobberley, Alount Albert, and Aliss Winifred Crosher, Takapuna, 97 points 2 The judge said the performances were very good and the accompaniment was excellent. CHARACTER RECITAL Ladies or Gentlemen, in Costume Own Selection, from any Standard Author Aliss Rosie Kidson, Epsom, 111 points 1 Miss Elfrieda Hall, Herne Bay, 105 points • • • • • ■ 1 Aliss Doris Alesser, Mount Eden, 99 points ° The judge stated that the winner’s characterisation of Ophelia was wonderful. Her entrance and expressions were excellent, the whole performance being very convincing. MUSICAL MONOLOGUE Ladies or Gentlemen Own Selection Air. W. J. O’Connell, Ponsonby,' 106 points 1 Air. J. A. Sharp, Auckland, 105 points 2 Aliss Alar got Trafford, Takapuna, 104 points 3 Aliss Phyllis Alobberley, Alount Albert, and Aliss Doreen Saunders, Auckland, highly commended. This class was stated to be good. The correct volume and cohesion between the performer and accompanist were well maintained. MEZZO-SOPRANO SOLO “Sing, Break Into Song” (Mallinson). Aliss Dorothy Richardson, Auckland, IS4 points 1 Aliss Ida Armstrong, Auckland, 177 points .' 2 Airs. J. I. Owen, Alount Albert, 175 XToints .. 3 The judge stated the section was fairly good, although the winner was the only singer to appreciate fully the true spirit of the song. ORATORIO SOLO (Soprano) “Rejoice Greatly” (Alessiah) Aliss Dorothy Richardson, Auckland .. 1 Aliss Edith Strange, Ponsonby, and Aliss Rita Alasson, Carterton . . 2 The judge said the winner gave a splendid and accurate interpretation. MODERN POPULAR SONG Boys or Girls Under 16 “Only The River Running By” (Hopkins) Aliss Norma Stevens, Grey Lynn, 17S points 1 Air. Desmond Casey, Birkdale, 177 points 2 Aliss Rena Geddes, Alount Eden, 175 points .. 3 The judge said that the class was an excellent one, all competitors being very close. SONG AND ACCOMPANIMENT Lady Vocalist, with Lady or Gentleman Accompanist Own Selection Miss Ida Armstrong, vocalist, with Airs. Oldfield, 178 points .. .. . .. .. 1 Aliss Edna Peace, vocalist, with Mrs. Kersey, 170 points 2 Airs. J. I. Owen, vocalist, 'with Mrs. N. Le Petit, 166 points 3 OPERATIC DANCE Over 15 Aliss Isabelle Brook, Epsom, 91 points 1 Aliss Alarjorie Brook, Epsom, 90 points 2 Aliss Alabel Andrews, Onehunga, S 4 points 3 Aliss Ena Lester, Remuera, and Aliss Del Thompson, Auckland, highly commended. The performances were stated to be charming, and' were beautifully executed. All the finalists were worthy of the utmost praise.
CHARACTER DANCE 12 to 15 Aliss Wilma Lockwood, Auckland, 85 points l Aliss Gaynor Alg.xwell, Remuera, 83 points 2 Aliss Daphne Polglase, Auckland, 81 points 3 Aliss Kathleen Boyle, Ponsonby, highly commended. This was a very dainty class, the dances being well executed. CLASSIC DANCE Greek or Eastern. Barefoot. Over 16.. Aliss Isabelle Brook, Epsom, 92 points 1 Aliss Gwenth AlcNaughton, Grey Lynn, 91 points .. .. .. .... .. 2 Aliss Alabel Andrews, Onehunga and Aliss Peggy Holmes, Parnell, 84 points . . 3 The judge said this was a most interesting class, and the performances were all good.
