CIVIC OCTOPUS

COUNCILLOR’S WARNING GREATER AUCKLAND’S ACRES A NOTE of warning against indiscriminate absorption of subordinate local bodies was sounded by Cr. L. A. Eady at last evening’s City Council meeting. The need for a defined policy on amalgamation was emphasised by Cr. Eady, who moved the following motion: — “That the Finance Committee be asked to bring down a report defining the policy of the council with respect to future amalgamations of local bodies with the Auckland City Council.” “In absorbing Tamaki,” said Cr. Eady, “we have taken on the responsibility for 33 miles of roads and 500 acres of practically undeveloped country.” AUCKLAND AND GLASGOW In round figures, Auckland’s acreage | was now only 500 less than that of ' Greater Glasgow, with six times the population. Finance must be the basis of amalgamation. Cr. A. J. Entrican seconded the motion and Cr. G. Ashley supported it. “We don’t expect to turn every outlying road into another Queen Street.” said Cr. J. A. C. Allum, stating that amalgamation was a subject on which they could not have a defined policy. Comparing Auckland with Glasgow, the difference in the density of population had to be remembered. The motion was carried.
