TO FOSTER MOTOR BODY-BUILDING
RESTRICTION ON IMPORTS A plan for helping the motor bodybuilding industry of New Zealand has been suggested to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce by the Palmerston chamber. The following resolution was passed by the - Southern body: “That with a view to fostering secondary industries in New Zealand, legislation should be passed restricting the number of motor-cars imported into the Dominion with bodies as compared with the importation of the same make of car chassis only.” Explaining the proposal, the chamber writes: “In Australia we understand that for any particular make of car, only 25 per cent., are allowed to be imported into the country complete with bodies; i.e., that for every 100 cars of one make imported into the country, bodies of 75 would have to be built in this country. “This legislation would foster an important secondary industry and thus provide employment for a large number of people, besides keeping a considerable amount of money in New Zealand.” The Auckland chamber will consider the resolution at its meeting next Thursday.
