SOCCER TEST IN 1902
England v. Australia. —A correspondent of "London Sporting Life’’ calls attention to an international Association football match between England and Australia that, he says, is not to be found in the official records. It was played at Fremantle at the conclusion of the English cricket tour in 1902. and was the outcome of a sporing challenge from West Australia. Archie MacLaren accepted the challenge, and the game was placarded as the "First International Association Match between England and Austra- '* Doubtless the Australians imagined they would have a soft thing on, but there were in the England side such tine footballers as Charles McCaliey, A. A. Lilley, Willie Quaife and John Gunn, and there were other well-known Rugger players, in the side, Gilbert Jessop being in goal. England won by three goals to one, and the third goal was most spectacular. Jessop went from goal to centreforward. made a solo run from the middle of the field, and finished by banging the ball between the posts.
