LIABILITY OF CROWN
MENTAL HOSPITAL DRAINS CONCESSION BY BOARD The long-standing dispute between the Auckland . and Suburban Drainage Board and the Government with regard to the sewer connections with the Auckland Mental Hospital, was solved at the quarterly meeting of the board last evening. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, wrote requesting that the board should provide additional junctions for the drainage of the Mental Hospital. The work was urgent and he thought the board would not withhold consent. The Crown, he said, was exempt from the payment of rates and could not agree to the terms imposed by the board in 1924. Mr. A. J. Entrican said it was unfair that the Crown should refuse to contribute to the cost of the sewers, The chairman of the board, Mr. G. Baildon, said that the sewer ran through the Mental Hospital property and the board would only have to provide junctions. Permission to make connections was then granted by the board.
