CLEANING A SEWER

TORRENT UNDER QUEEN ST. DRAY-LOAD OF SHINGLE Workmen were busily cleaning out the Queen Street sewer to-day. Deep down in the yellow torrent which rushed toward the harbour a man was clearing quantities of sand and shingle. It was a collection of some years’ standing—eight years, one of his companions said. Early this morning a whole drayload had been passed up through the tiny man-hole in Queen Street, and there was evidently more to follow. The sewer is large enough to allow a man to walk through it and although it has been there for many years it looks strong enough to last for centuries. The sewer which collapsed in Wellesley Street has now been repaired and to-day workmen are busily filling in the huge excavation.
