DRAINAGE BOARD AND HOBSON BAY LAKE
LIABILITIES EXAMINED The Harbour Hoard notified the Drainage Board yesterday that it had approved the construction of a temporary artificial lake in Hobson Bay. This prompted the Drainage Board’s engineer, Mr. H. H. Watkins, to disclaim the accepted idea that he had ever favoured or recommended the reclamation of Hobson Bay for commercial sites.
Mr. Watkins pointed out, however, that the scheme would involve the Drainage Board with regard to the main sewer, and the possible contamination of the lake by the storm-water discharged. The lake level would make the main sewer difficult to inspect and maintain, and might ultimately make it necessary for the board to provide culverts to divert storm-water from the lake.
The board decided to seek legal advice on various aspects of the scheme.
