MISTAKEN HOSPITALITY

LEADS TO GAOL Trouble befel four men at Pokaka on Saturday. It appears that the motor-car in which they were riding pulled up at a bad piece of road, and some men working near were asked to give a lift. Three came over and one was handed a bottle. Unfortunately for the hospitable one the recipient proved to be a prisoner, and although no liquor was consumed the warders took the matter up and pursued the car. The men, John Rogers, John Wansbrough, Thomas Moran and John McCotter, were brought before the court at Raetihi. Francis John Rogers was charged with supplying liquor to a prisoner undergoing sentence, and also with being drunk; John Wansbrough was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car, and also aiding in the supply of liquor to a prisoner; Thomas Moran was charged w r ith being drunk and aiding in supplying a prisoner with liquor; John McCotter was similarly charged. After hearing evidence the court fined Rogers £ 1 on the charge of drunkenness and sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on the charge of supplying liquor to a prisoner. Wansbrought was convicted and discharged on the charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motorcar, and was fined £ 5 for assisting to supply liquor to a prisoner. McCotter and Moran were fined £1 and costs on charges of drunkenness.
