the UNDERSTANDING HEART”
AT MAJESTIC ON FRIDAY Private individuals and corporations securing contracts from Uncle Sam to cut timber in the vast national f°iesL preserves are up against the strictest contract regulations and Government inspectors in the Federal sei vice. After generations of ruthless exploitation of timber lands the lumber barons to-day face the strictest supervision when cutting trees oh Uncle Sam’s premises. The ruthless exploitation of Government forest has been called to a halt and private individuals and corporations cannot cut trees except after winning contracts through competitive bidding. Even then no tree may be cut unless it is inspected by a forest ranger and marked for cutting. The ranger estimates the timber footage of each tree and sees that the branches are piled and safely burned. By this strict supervision the Government hopes to conserve, the virgin forest and through a process of reforestation preserve enough lumber for future generations. That the indiscriminate exploitation of timber lands has boosted the price of that commodity can readily be believed when statistics show that lumber thirty years ago cost only the freight rate now in effect between the Pacific Coast and Chicago. Through the careful husbanding of lumber from the national forests it appears that there will be no timber famine for another hundred years. Even that danger could be done away with if Congress could be prevailed upon to reforest the 81,000.000 barren acres, or slacker acres, as they are known to the rangers, that are included in the national forest lands. The great wilderness and solitude of these forest lands form a colourful background for “The Understanding Heart.” a Cosmopolitan production to he shown at the Majestic on Friday. The picture, filmed by Metro-Gold wynMayer and directed by Jack Conway, features Joan Crawford, Rockliffe Folio wes. Carmel Myers and Francis X. Bushman, junr.
