FOOTBALLERS ENTERTAINED

DANCE AT ROTORUA On Monday evening the Rotorua Rugby Union held a carnival dance ;ind 500 tournament in honour of the visit of the Auckland Rugby touring team. Stormy weather did not affect the attendance, 230 people mustering at Dixieland to welcome the visitors. In the Monte Carlo competition the Aucklanders were slowly but surely eliminated, the honours finally falling to two local women. The winners of the 500 tournament (seven tables) were: Airs. Norris and Airs. Albert Smith, senr., the latter playing as a man. The guests of the evening gave a delightful rendering of their silent soap-box speech, a popular and original item that won several encores. During the supper adjournment. Air. Overton Smith, president of the Rotorua Rugby Union, welcomed the visiting team in a neat and appropriate speech, emphasising the value and stimulus to local football afforded by the temporary sojourn among them of acknowledged masters of the game. Mr. Potter, manager of the Auckland team, in happily phrased terms, expressed the pleasure the visit had given them and voiced the regret of the team that their stay was not of longer duration. After supper streamers and confetti were lavishly used and the dance concluded with hearty cheers for the visitors and expression of the wish of all present that the tour would be one of uninterrupted triumph and enjoyment.
