INTER-ISLAND RUGBY MATCH

TO BE LIMITED TO CANDIDATES FOR SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR Press Association WELLINGTON, Tuesday. That tlie annual North v. South Island match should be an actual trial of strength between the two islands was the view expressed by the Management Committee of the Wellington Rugby Union at its meeting to-night. The subject was introducel by a notification from the New Zealand Union that owing to the early departure of the New Zealand team for South Africa next season it had been decided that only players who could make the trip to South Africa should be included in this season's North v. South match. The chairman, Mr. J. Prendeville, said he did not agree with this view. The match between the two islands should be an actual trial of Rugby strength, irrespective of whether the players taking part could go to South Africa or not. Besides debarring many players who could not go to Africa, it would be unfair to debar the Maori players of both islands from taking part in the game. He moved that the committee consider the match should be an actual trial of strength, and if not, it should be played as the trial game. Mr. G. F. Jackson seconded the motion. Mr. J. King said he agreed with the New Zealand Union. The trials to select the team for South Africa had to be played this season, and in the circumstances it would be no use including players who were not available for the South African tour. Mr. R. Murphy held the same view and said they wanted all the trials they could get. Mr. H. D. Morgan said there might be a young player who was good enough to get into one of the island teams this year, and it would be unfair to deprive him of his chance just because he could not make the trip to South Africa. Mr. A. J. Griffiths said the New Zealand Union was holding plenty of other trial matches. If only players eligible to go to South Africa were allowed to play this year’s North v. South game could not count in the records. Mr. Prendeville’s motion was carried.
