NOTES AND COMMENTS
FROM NEAR AND FAR CANDIDATES FOR WELLINGTON A good response was received by the Wellington Club from owners for the forthcoming fixture, despite the fact there was such a variance between the classes. Several entrants for the big handicap—The Bollard Memorial — found consolation in nominating for the mile saddle, as a second chance, while ten New Zealand Cup nominees have been listed for the mile-and-a-quarter Cup trial. The Novice Hand-cap (3.45 limit) and Borough Handicap (3.36 limit) have filled well, quite a number of those entered in the former heat also being found in the tighter event. Chances for Cup Candidates Last year New Zealand Cup candidates were given a chance of having a try-out at the Greymoulh spring fixture in October, with a free-for-all on the first day and Jubilee Handicap, short limit, the concluding day. Very few candidates availed themselves of the opportunity, Great Bingen (who annexed both events), Acron, Talaro and Native Chief being the only Cun starters who were present. Wellington may have more of the high-class talent present, and Greymouth, with the inclusion of two shortlimit heats in October, will probably be visited with a larger number of Cup aspirants
Tackling the Big Guns St. Maura, Talent, Concliffe, Bell Harold, Bessie Logan and Holly Boy have elected to tackle the Cup aspirants in the big trial to be decided at the Hutt on September 17, and it will not occasion surprise to see the winner coming from this half-dozen. Talent’s form when last see out at Addington was encouraging, and it should not be forgotten that Frost’s pacer has raced successfully on the Hutt grass circuit. Chance to Make Good Neerson. a member of ,T. Bryce’s string, was expected to give some tangible proof of his capabilities last season, but the best he could do was to get second at Hawera. He was made a hot-pot each day, and after finishing out of a place on the opening day, beat all but the outsider, Vallamount, in his next essay. Neerson, who is a five-year-old son of Nelson Bingen— Neeratte, has not sported silk since, but is entered in the novice event, at Wellington. He is a half-brother to that good performer Glenelg.
Two Greats, but one Greater Great Eyre and Great Earl are both entered for the Wellington fixture next month, and while both are chestnuts in colour, and claim Great Audubon as their sire, they are of entirely different calibre. Last season Great Earl started nine times and registered three, victories, and promises to reach good company this year. Great Eyre only faced the starter on one occasion, at Cambridge, where, although unplaced, she made a creditable showing in mediocre company. The Mangeretrained mare may pick up a stake at one of the country meeting later on. An Unsuccessful Carnival
Carnival, a fine looking gelding by Great Audubon from Eulogy, was taken across the ranges from Christchurch to Greymouth in the New Year for onp event—eight-and-a-half furlong saddle —and he was considered unbeatable. The money poured info the machine from all quarters, and Carnival was right in the boom. But the good thing came undone and the Great Audubon gelding was taken home with his lace to the wall and did not see the races again. He is on the active list again and may contest the novice heat at the Hutt. Breeding that Counts
Jean McElwyn, a handsome filly by Nelson Bingen from Miss Spear, is a younger sifter to that promising pacer. Nelson McElwyn. who recorded three wins and several placings last season. Jean had u nm ir the. Trial Stakes at Ashburton in the winter,
