EIGHT-TON ROLLER OUT OF CONTROL
DASH OVER FOOTPATH SMASH NARROWLY AVERTED At the end of its day’s service, yesterday, an 18-ton road-roller was being driven across Queen Street, Oneliunga, to Princes Street Last, when an abrupt wrenching of the steering gear placed the machine suddenly out of control. Despite rapid action on the part of the driver, the unweildy machine mounted the pavement opposite the Post Office Hotel, and bordering the town railwaystation. The light fence was crumpled like paper, but luckily, after tlve front portion of the roller had become overhung on the railway slope, the huge rut on the pathway prevented the much heavier rear portion from following. Thus the ponderous machine has hung up to the time of I HE SUN going to press, affording an object of much interest and curiosity to all passers-by. The roller is a recent acquisition by the Borough Council. It is expected that upon being extricated from its present position the dmages incurred by the “runaway” will be found to be comparatively slight.
