LEYS INSTITUTE LECTURES

Sir,— It is to be regretted that the lectures at the Leys Institute are sparsely attended. Dr. Neale gives of his best and spares no pains in the preparation of his data. I have attended the series this winter and found the lectures most interesting. But a factor affecting the attendance may be the coldness of the lecture room. The public is not so hungry for mental sustenance as to leaves its comfortable fires and sit in a freezing chamber. We are told the brain only vibrates up to a certain degree when the temperature is low: in other words, mental torpor can be brought about as the result of cold. Last Saturday evening the entrance door of the chamber was left wide open and how the audience relished this can be readily imagined. It might be mentioned in passing that lecturers in Auckland very often fail to draw large audiences. May not the factor I refer to be the cause? HERBERT MULVIHILL.
