AUCKLAND CLUB TITLES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. Most of the players who will be engaged at the New Zealand championships during the week assembled at Hamilton during the week-end, and played over the course. Only favourable comments on its condition were : heard. The best round recorded was by J. j L. Black, the Hutt leader, who did ! a 73. T. H. Horton played round in 73. | and Hobson, the Sydney player, in 77. E. J. Moss recorded a 74, and H. B. , Lusk a 71>, missing a couple of short j putts. FOURSOME DRAW The championships will connivence on Wednesday with the championship foursomes, the draw being as follows: Professionals J. D. Macintosh and R. C. Butters with G. B. Forrest and J. Forrest. L. Ross and H. Green with G. W. Ritchie and J. Watts. F. Branch and E. J. Moss with G.’ J. Moss and A. J. Shaw. J. A. Clements and C. Clements with J. R. Galloway and T. Galloway. H. The first players in the foursomes will drive off at 9.30 on Wednesday morning and the afternoon round will commence at 12.30. The gallery will naturally be most attracted to the Duncan-Horton and Black-Black combination in the amateurs. Bell Wins Hamilton Title For the seventh year in succession N. Bell won the Hamilton Club's title on Saturday, when he beat G. F. Colbeck 8 and 7 in a 30-hole match. The match was square at the 7th, but Bell won the next four, and at lunch was 5 up, liis card showing 37 out and 39 home. In the afternoon Bell was soon 7 up. He won the sth, but Colbeck registered 3’s at the next two, and the match ended at the 11th, Bell's out score again being 37. P. Russell won the junior title by defeating L. Hogben 4 and 3. Rotorua Ends at 38th The Rotorua championship final was so evenly contested that T. Ilulton and M. S. Carr had to continue to the 3St.h before a decision could be reached, Hulton finally winning the title. The scoring was not specially good. Carr was one up after the morning round, and a splendid fight ensued. I, Shaw won the junior championship, beating J. Empen 4 and 3.
Maungakiekie Title The feature of the matches at Titirangi on Saturday was the defeat of the holder of the title, T. A. Goulding, by A. E. Robinson, who went into the semi-final by a 3 and 2 margin. He will now meet R. M. George, who put W. L. Robinson out 3 and 2. In the. lower half J. M. Hunter beat J. Hockin one up at the 20th. Juniors. — A. B. Joplin beat F. S. Ballin, 1 up at the 19th; 11. S. Keesing beat I. B. Stewart, 1 up at the 19th. The second rounds of the junior and C grade championships of the club were played at One Tree Hill. The results are as follow: — Junior. —F. W. Wilson beat TI. C. Spinley, 5 and 3; IT. Worsley beat J. S. Rankin, 2 and 3. C Grade. —F. Newell beat W. Calderwood, 1 up; S. Gy Hies beat S. Thornes, 4 and 3. The Taylor Bowl at Titirangi has been won by lan Stewart. This was a handicap match play event. At One Tree Hill on Saturday C. Schnauer won a bogey handicap from the 14 mark, 2 up. ' Auckland Club Matches in the second round of the club championship and in the first round of the junior championship were played by members of the Auckland Golf Club at Middlemore on Saturday. Conditions were ideal for golf and the course was in good order. Club championship matches resulted follow: —H. L. Rees beat R. O. Gardner, 2 and 1; It. G. Rainger beat E. L. Bartleet, 3 and 2. Following were the results of junior championship games:—B. C. Jacobs beat W. A. Fairclough, 4 and 2; J. F. Ewen beat H. D. Roberton, 7 and 6; B. C. Hart beat J. K. Lusk, 6 and 4; W. Pavitt beat F. Wilson, 4 and 2; D. Poison beat J. G. Haddow, 7 and 6. Members of the Auckland Golf Club not taking part in the club and junior championships played in a bogey competition at Middlemore on Saturday, 52 taking part. The competition resulted in a tie between E. B. Brown and Ross Martin, who finished all square. Owing to the New Zealand championship meeting at Hamilton and the Rotorua tournament following immediately after, the committee of the club has decided to change the 72-holes medal competition to one of 54 holes, and play will now commence on September 17 instead, of September 10. The third round for the E. R. Bloomfield Bowl will be played in conjunction with the third round of the medal competition on October 1. One Tree Hill Ladies The championship week of the Maungakiekie Ladies’ Golf Club will commence at One Tree Hill to-morrow. The Tauranga Golf Club's championship competition has advanced to th* final stage. A. Matheson will meet G Gibbs in a match over 36 holes. In the semi-final Matheson beat Pott, last season's champion, 5 and 3, and Gibbs beat Ralfe, 5 and 4. Both the players in the final have been playing consistently gooc golf for some time and a close match i.expected. In the junior championships B. Snodgrass, by beating P. G. Tizard, ha: reached the filial stage.
