VETERAN FIRE FIGHTER
MR. SUTHERLAND HONOURED A befitting opportunity was availed of at the social gathering arranged by Onehunga Orphans’ Club on Saturday evening to make a slight public recognition of the services of the president of the club, Mr. E. V. Sutherland, who for nearly a quarter of a century had been connected with 'the local fire brigade. There was a large muster of citizens and visitors present, over which Mr. J. Warren, vice-president of the Orphans’ Club, presided. The United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand was represented by the following officers: President, Superintendent Garnett, Thames; assistantpresident, Supt. T. Anderson, Rotorua; senior vice-president, E. Freeman, Masterton; junior vice-president, C. E. Gilbert, Onehunga; chief advisory office, T. J. Watts, Newmarket; treas-ury-secretary, C. A. Osborne, Onehunga. The chairman explained that following upon the recent somewhat important function held at Onehunga Fire Station, the Fire Brigades’ Association executive had decided upon the presentation to Bro. E. V. Sutherland of a certificate life-membership of that body. His services as an old fireman, particularly in the “arduous and trying old times” of the past, had fully entitled Mr. Sutherland to some little record in the public history of the affairs of the borough, and the piece of parchment handed to him carried with it all good wishes from old comrades and new members in particular, and the appreciative voice of the residents of the borough as a whole. Complimentary remarks were also added by the Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, and other well-known citizens, “three-times-tliree” concluding the brief function.
