ANGLICAN DANCE AT WHANGAREI

The Armstrong Avenue Church Social Committee held its second dance in Gardner’s Hall, Whangarei, on'Wednesday, and the function proved to be one of the most successful held in 1 Whangarei this season. It must be very many years since any series of 1 church socials has been as popular as those organised by the little church in Armstrong Avenue. The large hall was turned for the occasion into a 1 gay place of streamers, festoons and fernery. Beautiful large fern and palm trees covered the sides and ends < of the hall, three splendid pungas at the landing being exceptionally fine, j The SOO dancers present thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the evening, and although occasionally the , floor spaoe was taxed to accommodate j all, yet this was taken in good spirit by those present, and was in itself a j tribute to the esteem in which these functions are held. The music was provided by an orchestral quartette consisting of Messrs, j A. Smyth, piano, D. Mason, violin, B. I Leatherby, cornet, A. Leatherby, trombone, and their excellent playing from 1 the opening overture to their final j dance number, added much to the j pleasure of the evening. Appreciated

extras were played by Miss C. Calkin and by Miss Boos, the latter being assisted by Mr. Hughes, violin. Mr. If. Haynes was master of ceremonies. Tincommittee, under the leadership of the Rev. J. Rich, and the large army ol helpers, must have felt amply repaid for their thorough and enthusiastic work. The committee has already planned to hold its final dance for the season on Wednesday. September 21. and it isparing no pains to make its farewell carnival night one which will be long remembered. The novelties will probably include many never before seen in Whangarei.
