OHURA DAIRYING
PROGRESS OF HERD-TESTING The highest herd in the Kaitieke Herd Testing Association for the past season is that owned by Mr. D. J. Bruce, of Niho Niho, in the Ohura district. Particulars regarding the progress of the herd will be of wide interest to farmers in the central King Country. The 25 cows comprising the herd averaged 354.911 b. of butter-fat in 281 days. Mr. Bruce commenced testing in the 1923-1924 season, with a herd of 21 cows, which averaged 243.161 b. of butter-fat in 254 days. The latest figures represent an increase of 1411 b. of fat per cow, and this at a value of Is 3d a lb. represents an improvement worth £221 per annum. In the course of the four years of testing nearly 50 pel- cent, of the herd has been culled and replaced with heifers of good breeding. To obtain this end Mr. Bruce procured a bull with a good butter-fat backing on both sides, and it is safe to predict that by working along these lines he will soon show a still further increase in the butter-fat producing value of his herd.
