AUSTRALIAN MARATHON
WON BY QUEENSLANDER By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright SYDNEY, Sunday. In the Marathon race, the result was as follows:—McMurdo, Queensland, 1; Hoydon, New South Wales, 2; Bateman, New South Wales, 3. Time, 31i 6m 20s. Of the original 40 entrants 25 started. Burton, the New Zealander, did not compete. For the first time the race carried with it the Australian championship. The weather was fine and the course in good order. Gainsford and Hoydon, of New South Wales, were most prominent up to 10 miles, where Gainsford met with trouble to a leg and dropped out. Hoydon carried on with Bateman and McMurdo next. At 23 miles Hoydon had a lead of over five minutes and looked an easy winner, but lie tired and at 25 miles his lead had been reduced to under one minute. McMurdo, running strongly, won by 500 yards. The distance was 26 miles 355 yards. Hoydon’s time was 31i 9m 36s.—A. and N.Z.
