SIXTH DAY RESULTS HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED The Town Hall was comfortably filled last evening, when the fifth day o£ the Auckland competitions concluded with an excellent programme of vocal, instrumental, elocutionary and dancing numbers. Popular features of the day sessions were the sacred song class for gentleman and Scottish national song. The former class revealed a much-im-proved standard, some good performances being given. In the national class interesting competition resulted. The junior and primary schools’ choirs again attracteci considerable interest, two very close contests providing excellent performances. In the elocutionary class the poem, “The Woman Who Understands,” was selected for the recitation class for girls 16 to 20. A margin of only one point separated the two first placed competitors. The results are as follow: JUNIOR CHOIR Mixed Voices “The Bells of St. Michael’s Town” and “The Streamlet.” Xortlieote Junior High School, 345 points 1 Seddon Memorial Technical College, 340 points 2 Xormal School, 332 points 3 The intonation and notation of the winning choir was excellent, stated the judge. The singing was of a particularly high standard. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ CHOIRS Standard V. and Over “Where the Bee Sucks” (Arne). Xortheote Junior High School, IS4 points -1 Bayfield District School, Herne Bay, IS2 points 2 The competing teams were very even, said the judge, and the singing was of an exceptionally high standard. SONG Girls 12 to 16 “The Hills of Donegal” (Sanderson). Miss Sybil Phillipps, Herne Bay, IS4 points . 1 Miss Doreen Saunders, Auckland, 177 points • 2 Miss Jean Scott, Bayfield, 172 points 3 The winner gave a delightful rendering, said the judge, singing it in the spirit intended. Tlie other performers, although good, failed to retrieve the lead Miss Phillipps gained in the preliminary trials. Owing to an oversight the name of Rena Geddes was overlooked in announcing the recalls in this class on Thursday morning, and was therefore not able to sing at the session last night. This competitor, who received 176 marks, lias been awarded third place. SACRED SONG Gentlemen Mr. M. West, Mount Eden, 171 points 1 Mr. T I-laworth, Mount Eden, 155 points 2 Mr. C. Pearce, Mount Albert, 150 points 3 The judge said the renderings were very good, especially Mr. West's. The winner was far ahead of the other contestants.® SCOTTISH NATIONAL SONG > Open to All Mr. T. Haworth, Mount Eden, ISO points J Miss Edna Peace, Xortlieote. ,171 points • \ • 2 Miss Rita Masson, Carterton, 150 points • • • 3 The judge stated Mr. Haworth’s singing was perfect. His enunciation was far superior to that of the other singers. HUMOROUS RECITAL Gentlemen. Mr. Trevor Binns, Grey Lynn. SO points 1 Mr. Allan MeSkimming, Epsom. 79 points 2 Mr. Fred. Hargreaves, Auckland. 7S points 3 The judge remarked that the selected pieces were poor. ln most instances, however, the rendering was satisfactory. RECITATION Girls, 16 to 20 “The Woman Who Understands” (E. J. Appleton) Miss Audrey Perry, Auckland, 86 points 1 Miss Winifred Crosher, Takapuna, 85 points 2 Miss Iris Andrews, Hamilton, 82 points 3 The judge said that while the performances were good, the competitors did not appreciate the- value of deportment. VIOLIN SOLO Open “Hymn to the Sun” (Rimsky-Korsakoff) Miss Nellie Cameron, Auckland, 178 points 1 Mr. A. Gracie, Auckland, 175 points .. 2 Miss Phyllis Best, Devonport, 165 points 3 The judge said the interpretation of the piece was excellent and all the finalists gave good renderings. TO-DAYS SESSIONS There were short sessions at the Concert Chamber and Unity Hall this morning. At the former place the girls’ song under 12 and piano solo, 12 and under 14, occupied the attention of the musical judge, two elocutionary items, recitation for girls under 7, and prepared scripture reading being taken at the Unity Hall. Recalls in piano solo (12 and under 14) and girls’ song (under 12) will be taken at this afternoon’s matinee. In addition, vocal duet (lady and gentleman), brass quartette, contralto solo, song by New Zealand composer, combined ballet and oratorio solo (bass or baritone) will be taken. As a result of the Heifetz recital being held in the Town Hall to-night there will be no evening session. To-day’s results are as follow: GIRLS’ SONG. Under 12. “Cherry Ripe."
