“Footbrawl” at Christchurch
KOHN SHIELD DONNYBKQOK "TRAMMIES” HAVE DAY OUT (.Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. When the Auckland Tramways clashed with the Wellington Tramways in their annual Rugby match for the Kohn Shield at Christchurch yesterday, the Southern fans were treated to a game seldom equalled for rough and unsportsmanlike play. Although the ground was wet and slippery, the game was very fast and Auckland came ofe victors by 13 points to 6. Kicking and punching in the scrums and continual “scragging” were responsible for the game being stopped no fewer than 17 times, while first’ aid was rendered to injured players on several occasions. The referee was continually cautioning players throughout the game, and it was surprising that some were not ordered off. At one stage of the game, nine players abandoned Rugby and took part in a “Donnybrook.” During these particular moments, however, the referee’s attention was directed toward the game at the other end of the field.
