UNSAFE BUILDING
OPOTIKI SKATING RINK PRECAUTIONS DEMANDED (From Our Own Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, To-day. A special meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council was held last night to consider the question of renewing the licence of King George’s Hall as a skating rink. After the by-laws relating to licences for places of public amusements had been read an animated discussion took place. Cr. Fleming said the council had acted illegally in granting the first licence in the face of the report from the architect that the building was unsafe. The council was now placed in a serious position and should get out as soon as possible and should put themselves right within the law. After a long debate it was decided to renew the licence subject to the requirements to make the building safe being accepted by the owner. The granting of the licence a week ago raised a storm of protest in Opotiki owing to the building being considered likely to collapse through vibration.
