SOCCER PROSPECTS

Championship Resumed

CUP-TIE AT HUNTLY

THE Soccer championship competitions will be resumed to-morrow when the big attraction will be the meeting between Thistle and North Shore. Thistle now has a long lead With Shore next to it on the ladder. Blandford Park has been closed and the game transferred to Victoria Park, with the Navy-Onehunga match set down as a curtainraiser.. Northcote meets Y.M.C.A. on the Domain, and Ponsonby journeys to Huntly to play Rotowaro in the provincial final for the Chatham Cup.

Chatham Cup Tie.*— Ponsonby is Auckland’s hope in the Chatham Chip contest this season, and the team has been in steady training to gain the Dominion championship. The “Ponies” had a very easy win over Waro on Saturday last, but will find the Rotowaro miners a much tougher proposition. The Huntly district has some very solid Soccer ciubs and the winners of the local knock-outs will have the advantage of playing at the Huntly ground, which has a pronounced slope most disconcerting to players who are not used to it. Two seasons ago the “Ponies” succeeded on a similar mission. when they knocked out the Pukemiro miners at Huntly after a memorable match, and last year the Shore eleven settled Huntly Thistle on the same ground.

But the miners play a hard, bustling game, and Ponsonby will be fully extended to win to-morroj T . A number of enthusiasts are accompanying the team, and the Auckland Soccer fans hope for a win for the blue and black brigade, who will be at their full strength, except that Sandy O’Brien is still out of action, but Hunter is a lively colt in a cup-tie struggle. Innes Would be wise to stick to his old position on the wing, where he has more freedom of movement, and is not so easily marked as at centre-forward, but Bell is such a glutton for work that he has a tendency to go scouting for the ball, instead of adopting the Fabian tactics of Archibald, and lying SOCCER TEAMS TO-MORROW’S GAMES Senior Division North Shore.—Lipscombe, Gerrard, Colebouine, Renshaw, Baxter, Jones, Cleal, Woolley, Whitley, Jay, Bradshaw. behind the backs to wait for an opening. CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES Shore v. Thistle. —The leaders and runners-up in the championship should provide a great struggle in the big game at Victoria Park, and Shore is making a determined attempt to lower the Scots’ standard to-morrow. Bradshaw and Baxter have returned to the seasiders’ ranks and Thistle will not be at full strength, Hislop being ail absentee, but Kay is back again and a good display of the code should be witnessed. In the first meeting between them the game was one of the best seen this season, Shore only being narrowly defeated after giving the champions a big scare, and it would not be surprising to see the colts score a win to-morrow. Navy v. Onehunga. —At the last match between these teams Onehunga knocked the service team out of the Chatham Cup and the sailoi-s are looking to avenge the defeat to-morrow, when they will be represented by a much stronger team. The match was originally set doivn for the Dock ground at Devonport, but has now been made the curtain-raiser on No. 1 ground at Victoria Park. It should he an attractive game and Navy may prove too strong for the West Coasters. Northcote v. Y.M.C.A. —Northcote is Still in the unenviable position of occupying the foot of the ladder and will make a desperate attempt to move up before the season closes. They arc appearing at full strength to-morrow, while the Young Men will miss Humphries, who has been such a great scoring factor in their front line this season. The match should provide a good, even game and it will not be surprising if the strawberry growers secure a couple of much-needed points at the expense of the weakened Y.M. team. Dacre Cup-Tie. —The replay for the Dacre Cup-tie between Takanini and Northcote has been transferred from Victoria Park to the Domain. Last Saturday the teams could not reach a decision, even after extra time, at Takanihi, and another even go is certain to-morrow. F. Smith, Mills, Reid, Moran, Whiteley.
