BRAVO, AVONDALE

FUNCTION TO ASSIST POOR DUAL ENTERTAINMENT Both halls, large and small, had to be requisitioned at Avondale for the holding of a dance and “500” evening in aid of the poor of the district. The effort, organised by Miss D. Harris, met with a wonderful response, the dual function being acclaimed one of the most successful the district can boast of. The result will be the handing over of £2O to the Benevolent Society for the relieving of distress. When the good object was made known a band of willing helpers came forward and gave valuable assistance in perfecting elaborate arrangements, . the local firefighters being among the i first to put their weight in. The card evening was easily the i most successful held this winter. Seated at 28 tables, no less than 112 players contested tempting prizes. The winners were: Ladies, Mrs. J. F. Atkinson, 1: Mrs. Sinclair, 2; Mrs. Lyons, 3. Gents, Mr. Haskell, 1: Mr. Vincent. 2; Mr. Heron, 3. Mr. Hooker excelled in controlling this section of the entertainment. The dancing also was popular, a throng of 100 couples participating, the music provided by Miss H. Harris, piano; Air. C. Stevens, violin; Mr. C. Johnson, cornet: and Air. T McMahon, saxophone, being particularly good. A solo given by Mrs. J. Parry was well received, the audience insisting on an encore. Airs. H. Waygood capably officiated ag accompanist. Likewise was an encore demanded from Airs. Henry for her handling of a character sketch entitled “The Belle of the Ball.” Intense excitement characterised a treasure hunt by the ladies for 24 prizes, Needless to say, all were found. A lucky ticket offering in connection with the function was won by Air. Clendon, s.en., entitling him to a mouquette dumpy cushion. For the dance Air. Rowe made a capable floor manager, while the M.C.'s, Alessrs. Bell and Walters, were most efficient. The supper, given by the people of Avondale, put the finishing touch to what was freely adjudged the most successful function attempted to date in the suburban district. To A-liss Harris and her willing workers the thanks of the district are extended for their noble effort.
