SABRE RATTLING IN JAPAN
CHINA THREATENED A NEWSPAPER AGITATION Du Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright TOKIO, Tuesday. The Osako “Mainichi,” and its sister paper, the Tokio “Nichinichi, ’ associated in the most powerful newspaper combination permeating Japan, demand war on China unless China's intention to levy surtaxes upon manufactured cotton output is abandoned. The “Mainichi" devotes two columns to an editorial call for immediate cessation of China's arrogance or Japau will be compelled to assert and protect her treaty rights forcefully, independently of other Powers, unless their co-operation is secured. The papers quote the Vice-Minister of Fore jn Affairs as saying that Japr . hitherto has been over-moder-ate, and it is high time she changed her policy and adopted a stern attitude, backed up by the entire nation. —A. and N.Z.
