NEW LYNN DRAINAGE
POSITION OF KARAKA BAY LOCAL COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A question regarding the discharge of sewage into Manukau Harbour was asked by Mr. W. J. Jordan in the House of Representatives to-day. He wished to know whether the Minister of Health had received any communication regarding the proposal. The Hon. J. A. Young said that he had had some protests against the decision of the New Lynn Town Board to construct a tunnel for drainage into Karaka Bay. He gathered that the work had been begun, and objections had been lodged, alleging that the effluent emptied into the bay was likely to cause trouble, and that the direction of the tunnel toward Shag Point would destroy beaches. The Department at present was endeavouring to arrange a conference among the local bo'dies affected to see that what was done would conform to the requirements of the larger portion of the community. The department would see that everything possible would be done to safeguard public health.
The New Lynn drainage scheme, to cost about £75,000, entails a tunnel from the junction of Links and N Portage Roads to Karaka Bay, something over 6,000 feet at one point to the sewer will be 140 feet below ground level. The commencement of the work refers to the sinking of shafts to reach the tunnel levels. The Health Department and Harbour Board have approved the scheme, the only effect of which is likely to be the discharge of a harmless effluent from the tanks, situated round the point on the seaward side from Karaka Bay, into which the sewers will drain.
