Northern Army To Cross Yangtse
CHINESE SKIRMISHES By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Received 9.5 a.m. SHANGHAI, Wednesday. THE Northerners’ attempt to cross the Yangtse and take Nanking' is expected every moment. Marshal Sun Chuan Fang’s army of 80,000, including a Russian armoured train division, is almost totally concentrated at Pukow, facing Nanking.
JpROM Pukow the Russians are daily bombarding Nanking without reply being made. Nanking railway stations are a daily target of the artillery, the purpose being to cripple the Southerners’ means of retreat by railway to Shanghai. Five train-loads of Southerners have arrived at Shanghai from Nanking, and were transferred to Hangchow in expectation of a coup d’etat against the Southerners. It is believed that the Nanking Government has agreed to hand over the defence of Nanking to the Hankow forces, which recently arrived in large numbers, and themselves retire en bloc to Hangchow.—A. and hj[.Z.
