WHERE TO HAUL-OUT?

QUESTION TROUBLING YACHTSMEN RIGHT TO THE BEACHES “The time has arrived when boat owners should be granted permanent hauling-out areas on the various beaches in Auckland,” said Mr. E. B. Web6ter, acting-chair-man, at a meeting of the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association last evening. When the question was introduced the chairman said he thought the association should try to devise ways and means of bringing this about. They all knew that the beaches were fast disappearing, and were being put to commercial uses. In his opinion as a yachtsman, they had a perfect right to the beaches, and with the continual filling-in of the foreshore it would soon become too expensive to carry on with yachting. “It is a pity.” said Mr. W. A. Wilkinson, “the clubs cannot stop where they are until such time as suitable hauling-out areas can be found for their boats.” It was suggested by Mr. C. J. Collings that the various clubs should meet to find out exactly what was required in hauling-out areas and clubhouse sites. A deputation could then wait on the Harbour Board and olace the Whole position before it. Mr. A. J. Collings pointed out that the Harbour Board had made provision in its boat-harbour scheme l’or hauling-out accommodation for 300 boats. The suggestion that a deputation should wait on the Harbour Board to speed up the work of filling in the outer wall at St. Mary’s Bay, which was to form the hauling-out area, was voiced by Mr. W. S. Goodison. If this were done he thought the boats could haul up there next winter. Mr. G. Mobberley pointed out that yachtsmen paid over £I,OOO to the Harbour Board in mooring fees alone. Boat owners had a right to use beaches for hauling-out purposes. It was eventually decided that the clubs should meet to discuss the question. A special meeting of the association will be held in about three weeks to consider the reports of the club delegates on the question.
