MOUNT ALBERT AND THE UNEMPLOYED

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS “IyTOUNT ALBERT is probably employing more labour in proportion to the valuation of its property than any other local body in Auckland/' said the Mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, at a meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening. Pie was referring to a letter from the Department of Labour before the council, asking what it was doing to relieve unemployment. It was decided to reply that the council was pushing ahead all available work, and endeavouring to qualify for a Government subsidy, to enable it to improve the reserves under its care. It was reported that 480 feet of path has been formed on the righthand side of King Street, and IGS feet on the other side. The council granted 30 permits for buildings, of a total value of £10,065. during the three weeks ending August 20. Nine of these were for dwellings. For the same period in July, 42 permits for work valued at £14,924 were granted. These included 14 permits for dwellings. On the motion of Councillor Floyd, the council decided to give the formation of a Transport Control Board its full support. “We are not getting a fair deal from the trams," said the proposer, “and should support this scheme.”
