WATER SUPPLY FOR MOUNT ROSKILL

CITY OR ONE TREE HILL? QUESTION AGAIN DEFERRED An article in Monday’s SUN, under the heading of “Unwarranted and Untrue,” and concerning the One Tree Hill water supply, was eagerly debated at the Mount Roskill Road Board meeting last evening. The subject opened with a letter from the One Tree Hill Board in connection with the offer the board had made to supply Mount Roskill with water at tenpence a 1,000 gallons, on condition that the latter board paid the cost of connecting the two supply At the previous meeting Mount Roskill maintained that the suppliers should bear such costs, and in reply the One Tree Hill Board now stated that Mount Roskill must bear such expenses, and undertake all arrangements for making the connections. The engineer submitted a report upon the respective pressures from the two supplies concerned, that from the city being 851 b a square inch, against 801 b from One Tree I-lill. The chairman expressed surprise at such an important difference in the two pressures, after what the board had been led to understand, and he doubted whether the readings had been accurately taken. Mr. L. A. Tozer, a’ member of the fire board, remarked that from a firefighting point of view it would be disastrous to join with One Tree Hill, and he explained his reasons, the principal point being that by connecting with the lower pressure from One Tree Hill the pressure would become proportionately low throughout the whole of Mount Roskill. An interview with the fire brigade superintendent convinced him that, under existing circumstances, connection with One Tree Hill was not desirable. The chairman said it seemed to him that the fire board stuck for the City Council —why, he could not say. Perhaps he was sceptical, but now he wished to learn something reliable about the position before the board broke away from the City Council. At this juncture a point for debate arose upon the quality of the water supplied by One Tree Hill, and an emphatic denial was made by Mr. R. G. Clark, as to the statements made on the One Tree Hill supply. After further discussion upon pressures, etc., the whole subject was deferred for further consideration.
