NANKING SKIRMISH
MARINES LANDED PROTECTION OF PROPERTY (British Official Wireless. — Copyright) Reed. 10.55 a.m. RUGBY, Tuesday. The landing on Sunday of 100 British marines at Nanking by The cruiser Hawkins, Admiral Tyrwhitt’s flagship, is a precautionary measure designed to afford protection to the International Export Company's building on the river front. This property is valued at over £2,000,000. It has been used as a refuge by all the foreigners in Nanking during local disturbances. At the time of the Nanking outrages early in the year the building was vacated, and great loss was incurred through wilful damage and looting by the Chinese soldiery, which continued .for many days despite the promises of local authorities to prevent it. The landing of the party of marines is designed to prevent a recuri-ence of such an episode in any disorders which may arise out of the present struggle for Nanking between the opposing Chinese forces.—A. and N.Z.
