varied PROGRAMME TO-DAY SPLENDID variety was again O provided at the concert chamber and Unity Hall yesterday evening# when recalls from a un'athy day session occupied the attention of the judges. T n all classes a good standard was maintained, and apart from the com- ‘ tjtive interest a very enjoyable nroirramme was presented. The programme at the evening sesion embraced 12 classes and included nncing, elocutionary, vocal and instrumental sections. The “Story Without Words” class was responsible tor several very entertaining items, that of the winners. Miss Doreen Saunders and Mr. Fred Hargreaves h<un* of a particularly high standard. Taking for her subject "The Auckland Competitions,” Miss Saunders cave a very entertaining imitation of competitors in the various sections. The judges were also impersonated to the huge delight of the audience which uickly recognised the subjects from t he wealth of detail provided. The results at the evening session jtre as follow:
DANCE DUO Under 10. piva, Parr and Dallas Letliaby, Auckland. S 7 points 1 Rboda and Olive Evans, Auckland, 8$ points 2 Ttubv Jones and Gladys Brown, Auckland. 82 points 3 Highly Commended.—Joy Dodder and Gladys Anderson, Auckland, and Gladys Cain and Olga Elsmore, Auckland. The judge said that the work done was of a very high standard. The winning performance was excellent, splendid technique being shown. SKIPPING DANCE 13 Years and Over. Keitha Somerville, Taumarunui, 80 points 1 Gladys Anderson, Ponsonby 78 points 2 Edna Tullett, Mount Eden, and Vilma Lockwood, Auckland, 77 points.. 3 The judge said that although the class was good several of the competitors tripped. The winner gave an excellent performance at the afternoon session. ACTION RECITATION Under 13. Sybil Wright, Frank ton, 103 points . . 1 Rosalie Daniels, Mount Eden, 102 points 2 Hope Dulinhanty, Papatoetoe, 101 points 3 Great difficulty was experienced in choosing the winner, stated the judge, gome of the competitors were inclined to give too much of a sketch rather than an action recitation. VIOLIN SOLO Under 14. "Londonderry Air” (O’Connor Morris). Arthur Leavins, Kemuera, 173 points 1 Joe Pelham, Royal Oak, 172 points 2 Norman Kersland. Parnell, 161 points 3 This class contained some very fine performances, the judge said. However, most of them were marred by faulty intonation. Taken all round the class was up to a good standard. BOYS’ SONG 12 to 16 Years. • The Moon Upon the Chimney” (R. Bolt). David Lunny, Birkenhead, 175 points 1 David Campbell, Remuera, 170 points 2 George Asher, Remuera, 165 points .. 3 Good quality of voice was shown in the class, the judge commented. In some <ases the tempo was inclined to be too slow. CHARACTER DANCE Over 15 Years. Miss Gwen. Macnaugliton, SS points 1 Miss Isabelle Brook, Epsom, 87 points 2 Miss Keitha Somerville. Taumarunui. 86 points 1 A very interesting class produced some food performances, remarked the judge. Although giving a clever performance it was necessary for the winner to be more careful in regard to rhythm. Miss Brook did not portray the true Hungarian dance, while Miss Somerville did not execute correct arm work in her Dutch dance. STORY WITHOUT WORDS Ladies or Gentlemen. One or more Competitors. Miss Doreen Saunders, Auckland, and Mr. Fred. Hargreaves, Auckland, equal 1 Highly Commended.—Miss Roza Tilton, Auckland, and Misses Phyllis DuncanBrown and Winifred Crosher, Takapuna. The judge said both the winning performances were well carried out. Mr. Hargreaves’s presentation, “The Wife's thoice Wins,” contained a good story. Miss Saunders’s, on the other hand, had not such a good story, but was marked by wonderful detail. It was a brilliant impersonation with oxcellent expression. PIANO SOLO Over 14 and Under 16 Years. Scherzo in E Minor (Mendelssohn). Mlm Phyllis Cato. Auckland, 171 points .. .. 1 Miss Elaine Clements, Mount Albert, 167 points 2 Mus Marie Darby, Manurewa, 164 points 3 The judge said that although there was some good work in the class, only some of the performers, including the winner, obtained the happy scherzo feeling. OPERATIC SOLO Gentlemen. Mr. James Dittler, Auckland, 172 points 1 Mr. Milton West, Mount Eden, 169 points 2 Mr. Raymond Wright, Avondale, 168 points 3 The judge did not comment on the Wor * generally, but remarked that opera, covering the whole gamut of human emotion, was very difficult to sing. The •‘inner had a nice quality voice and sang *lth mor* feeling than the others. v SOPRANO SOLO ;j ot previous prizewinners at competitions. "Song of a Nightingale” (Montague Phillips. Mias Queenle Poore, Ponsonby, 167 Points I Miss Edith Strange, Ponsonby, 165 points 2 Mias Ida Armstrong, Auckland, 164 points 3 The necessity for thorough study was L sse<l by the judge. He remarked uiat not one of the competitors had used the quick light t*mpo needed. The ''inner had given the best interpretation. ORATORIO SOLO Tenor. “How Many Hired Servants.” Mr. William Farrow, Auckland, 165 Points 1 Mr. Raymond Wright, Avondale, 152 points .. 2 The Judge considered the class somenat disappointing. ORATORIO SOLO Mezzo-Soprano. ‘•Angel* Ever Bright and Fair.” -1188 Eva Berry, Birkenhead, 176 . Points 1 i 8« Edith Strange, Ponsonby, 171 , Points 2 185 C«cilia Duncan, Mount Eden, 170 Points 3 judge considered this to be one of e best of the vocal classes.
