ROSKILL ROAD BOARDD

Representing 25 ratepayers of the neighbourhood. Mr. J. Duncan waited on the Alount Roskill Road Board at its ordinary meeting last evening, seeking an improvement in the condition of Duke Street, where stormwater had long created a nuisance. Several members endorsed justification of the request, and the board decided to carry out temporary work to abate the nuisance for the present. A donation of £ 1 Is was granted to the Labour Day celebration fund. The building inspector reported that 32 buildings were in course of erection in the district, and during the previous fortnight 14 new building permits had been issued upon a total estimated expenditure of £7,436w The engineer reported that a resident of Halsey Drive was erecting buildings on his property, but had refused to take out a permit for such work. He had notified the defaulter by letter, and had also paid him a personal visit, but the requests were simply received with abuse. In fact, said the engineer, the interview with the man had been accompanied by the “promise of a punching” of some of the board’s officials. The Chairman: Perhaps it is a pity he did not attempt the punching; he might have got something unexpected in return. Mr. Kerr, one of the most “heftybuilt” men on the board: Oh, we must protect our staff! A Voice: Yes, and perhaps he’ll visit you to-morrow and pay you some attention! Air. Kerr accepted the intimation with a smile. On the motion of Mr. Davies, it was resolved to give the man seven days in which to obtain a permit, or prosecute him. Information was sought by the Department of Labour concerning any ef forts by the board to relieve unemployment. The chairman observed that much as it might be desired in ont direction, he did not see the force of raising loans in the district, seeing that the board already had its work cut out to find employment for its own , staff. Air. Belcher expressed forcible objection to raising even £5,000 for such a purpose, without the consent of the ratepayers.
