PAPATOETOE TOWN BOARD

GENERAL MAINTENANCE WORK The Papatoetoe Town Board met on Tuesday. There were present Mr. A. W. Hall, chairman, Alessrs. W. J. Nicholson, W. Brown, J. Franklin, P. Pennell, E. S. Sorensen and G. Foster. The foreman reported the scarifying and rolling of Paton Avenue, the grading of Wentworth Avenue, and the ploughing of Wyllie Road. Station Road West had been levelled, scoria had been spread in Paton Avenue and Kenderdine Road; three crossings had been laid. He also reported the bad condition of Hillside Road, and the need of immediate repair to same. It was decided that the price for hire of a horse and dray to other local bodies be 17s 6d a day and 30s with driver. A communication was received from J. R. Self, advising that the scoria pit on his property was now open to the public, the price being 2s from the shoot and Is 6d from the floor. Air. E. Peglar wrote asking that the board drain his property on Coronation Road, which had been inundated since the laying of the footpath fronting his section. It was decided that the foreman inspect the property, and report to the chairman of the Works Committee. The foreman was authorised to spread scoria on Wintere Road to make the thoroughfare passable. It was decided that the works committee meet the chairman of Manukau Council and engineer on Portage Road on Wednesday to consider repairs. A recommendation was received from the traffic inspector that bus stops be appointed for the stopping places of the buses in the Papatoetoe Town Board district, and Messrs. Sorensen, Foster and the inspector were appointed to meet the manager of the bus company and confer on the question. Accounts totalling £299 7s 5d were passed for payment. An inquiry was received from the Government asking for particulars of what the board was doing in regard to unemployment, and it was decided that nothing could be done but that a series of entertainments be inaugurated to form a fund for the relief of families in poor circumstances, and a meeting be called of persons interested, includinf the ministers of the district.
