NILE IRRIGATION
NEW BARRAGE PLANNED SLUICE-GATES CONTRACT British, Wireless—Press Assn Copyright RUGBY, Sunday. It w r as recently announced that the firm of John Jackson, Limited, had received a contract, for the new Nile barrage at Nag Hamadi. Ransomes and Rapier, Limited, have now obtained the order for the necessary sluicegates and operating machines. This scheme forms the next step in the Nile irrigation, which was begun in 1889 with the construction of the famous Assuan dam, followed by the Esna barrage, built in 1908, and the S'ennar dam, opened last year. The site for the new barrage, which will be over half a mile in length, is 500 miles up the river, between the existing barrages of Assiut and Esna. It will effect the irrigation of 500,000 acres at all seasons of the year. This formerly was only possible at a time of high flood. The new barrage will enable two crops of cotton a year to be grown instead of one, and also will avoid the risks of incomplete irrigation due to the low levels and the consequent failure of the crops.—A. and N.Z.-
