HEAD STRIKES POLE RANGIORA FATALITY Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. John Holmes Hartley, aged 35, a carpenter, died yesterday at Rangiora, as a result of a serious injury through his head striking an electric light pole while travelling in a motor-car. The verdict at the inquest was one of accidental death. The late Mr. Hartley was sitting in the back seat of a car which was returning from Ashley to Rangiora and was driven by Mr. C. Devlin. There was a thick fog at the time and Mr. Hartley put his head out to ascertain the locality. The car was travelling at the extreme right of the road ‘and his head struck an electric light pole, rendering him unconscious. The car proceeded a short distance before Mrs. Hartley, who occupied the front seat, noticed there was something wrong with her husband. It was evident that he was seriously injured. Dr. P. Will was summoned, and on examination he ordered Mr. Hartley’s admission to the Brocklehurst Hospital, where his death followed.
