His injuries are not serious. Petroleum In Gippsland.—Samples of oil taken from a bore at Lake Bunga, in Gippsland, have been certified by the State Government Analyst to contain pure petroleum. A party of Government experts has loft to investigate the discovery.—A. and N.Z. South Polar Flight.—Lieutenant Balchen has arrived at Oslo to recruit a ship’s crew for Commander Richard Byrd’s South Pole expedition. It is proposed to start from California on October 19. —A. and N. 21. Loan Sanctioned.—The sanction of the Local Government Loans Board to tho supplementary loan of £20,000 for completing reticulations was notified in a letter to the Waitemata Power Board this morning. Injured Cyclist Progressing Well.— Mr. F. Bardsley, of 19 Shoal Bay Road, Devonport, who was injured in a collision between his motor-cycio* and a bus last Saturday, was reported this morning to be progressing satisfactorily. Steward's Fall.—A steward named Langmaid on board the coastal trading ship Rarawa, at present berthed at Onehunga, slipped on the companionway this morning and broke several ribs. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital by the St. John Ambulance. Lesson to Miners.—Three miners employed at Dobson, Greymouth, pleaded guilty to having a cigarette butt and matches in their possession while in the mine. They were convicted and ordered to pay costs. A heavy penalty was not asked for. Head Struck Pole.—John Holmes Hartley, a carpenter, of Rangiora, Canterbury, received injuries yesterday evening through his head striking an electric-light pole while travelling in a motor-car. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition.—Press Association. Homestead Destroyed.—On Saturday evening the seven-roomed wooden homestead of David Ellison, a farmer, of Fencourt, near Cambridge, was totally destroyed by fire. The probable cause was a spark from the sitting room fire setting the hearthrug ablaze. The fire was beyond control before it was discovered. The house was insured in the State Fire Office for £6OO, and the furniture for £2OO. —Press Association. Nine Months’ Gaol For Youth. —At the Napier Police Court to-day, Leonard Gordon Hamilton was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, cumulative, on three charges of false pretences, and remanded to Wellington, where a further charge will be heard against him. The accused is 19 years of age. The crimes were committed in Napier, Palmerston North and Auckland.—Press Association. Onehunga Fire.—Strolling along Norman’s Hill Road, Onehunga, at 10.48 o'clock last evening, Mr. Vernon Young, observed flames issuing from the rear of a residence occupied by Mr. L. Hammond. He rang the 'fire brigade alarm, and warned the occupants of the house, who were quite unaware of the outbreak, and proceeded with efforts at extinction just as the brigade with remarkable promptitude, arrived on the scene in command of Superintendent C. Gilbert. Any extensive damage was prevented.
