WHANGAREI REST ROOM
OPENING NEXT MONTH (From. Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, To-day. The management committee of the Whangarei Ladies’ Rest Room met in the new building yesterday afternoon. There was an attendance of Mrs. A. J. Murdoch, president of the Plunket Society; Mr. L. J. Brake, Mayor; Mr. T. Ellis, chairman of the Hospital Board; and Mr. L. Webb, chairman of the Whangarei County Council. It was decided to uphold the County Council’s protest against the installation of penny-in-the-slot locks in the rest room. Mr. Brake pointed out that if it were found advisable the scheme could be brought into operation later on. It was also decided that Mr. W. Jones, M.P., be asked to conduct the official opening, the suggested date being the second Saturday in September, at 2 p.m. Invitations will also be extended to Colonel Hunter, Director of Dental Work, and Sir Truby King. The three public bodies will share the cost of the opening, the Plunket Society volunteering to provide the afternoon tea. As very few women were casually in town before 10 a.m., it was resolved that the rooms should not be opened before that hour. Subject to the approval of the local bodies concerned, it was decided to accept the Plunket Society’s suggestion that hangings and curtains be purchased for the rest room, also that the floors should be covered with cork linoleum.
