RIFLE SHOOTING
DEFENCE CLUB SPLENDID SCORES RECORDED The yearly review of the City and Suburbs Defence Rifle Club shows that the past season has been most successful. The championship was not won until the last shot of the season, Riflemen H. J. Verrall and R. C. Russell tieing and shooting off. Rifleman Verrall won the event with the splendid score of 99 out of a possible 100 at 800 and 900 yards, in a tricky wind. This shoot was the outstanding one of the year, and none of the old shots were able to recall its equal at Penrose. Rifleman G. E. Watt with a total of 510 won the B grade championship after a consistent season, and is expected to develop into a first-class shot. The grand aggregates, comprising the totals of all shoots in the championship series were annexed by Rifleman A. J. Pieterson in A grade and Rifleman H. W. Verrall in B grade. Rifleman A. J. Pieterson also accounted in the competition for the best average. He secured 4.19 per shot, which was a remarkable figure owing to the fact that he fired in every match during the year. Service shooting was carried out frequently and the championship was won by Rifleman C. J. M. Clark, who compiled some excellent scores. In the championships the best totals were: A grade: H. J. Verrall 540, R. C. Russell 540, A. J. Pieterson 533, A. T. Patrick 532, C. J. M. Clark 531. B Grade. —G. E. Watt 510, N. D. Porritt 459, W. H. Verrall 455, L. Verrall 450. The prizes will be presented at the annual meeting on September 1.
