JUDGE CRITICISES ASSESSMENT COURT
OBJECTIONABLE TRIBUNAL Press Association. WANGANUI, Friday. _ “The Assessment Court is a most ob jectionable tribunal,” said Mr. Justice Reed during the hearing of a case in the Supreme Court in Wanganui to-day. “Its constitution is bad,” said his Honour. “The inclusion of the magistrate is all right, but one member is appointed by the Valuer-General and the other by the local body, so that persons interested have no representation at all. The whole inclination of the court would be to put valuations up as high as pbssible.
“I had a case before me in Auckland where the Assessment Court over-rode a decision of a magistrate and valued mud flats at £15,000, which were not worth 15,000 pence. Fortunately, it came before me in such a manner that I was able to deal with it.”
