NEWSPAPER DIPLOMAT
FRIEND OF ROYALTY PRESS RECORDER FOR KING By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyrigh: LONDON, Thursday. Thirty-three years’ close association with Royalty closed with the death o' George Smith, aged 64, as the immediate result o£ a motoring accident. Every newspaper announcement from Buckingham Palace came to the Presr Association in London through Mr. Smith, thence it was distributed to the newspapers throughout England. Thic was a unique journalistic position, giving him an intimate knowledge of Royalty. The King and Queen had a soft spot in their hearts for thir working newspaperman, who was entrusted to record their public engage ments. Th. late King Edward was specially fond of him. On one occasion Mr. Smith quietly slipped a sovereign intd King Edward's hand, when His Majesty wanted to buy a buttonhole from a charity floWfer-seller, but sudden!: discovered that he had no money.—A. and N.Z.
