Winter Quarters Getting Scarce
YACHTSMEN PERTURBED That some effort should be made to secure hauling-out areas for all time was the opinion unanimously expressed by members of various clubs at the a*nnual presentation of prizes at the Ponsonby Cruising Club last evening. Air. E. B. Webster* said that Auckland was gradually losing all its haul-ing-out areas. It was certainly very hard for the New Zealand Squadron and the Victoria Cruising Club to have to give up their winter quarters in Beaumont Street. He mentioned the case of a launchowner who stored his launch in a shed in Dominion Road as an instance of the shortage of hauling out space. Yachtsmen, lie said, would have to pull together and make their own provision lor their future welfare. Air. J. W. Frater, commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, said that the squadron did not at all enjoy the idea of being asked to leave its present quarters. Mr. E. J. Kelly said the Harbour Board had done a lot for yachting, but at the same time its decision to clear the boats out of Beaumont Street was very serious for boat-owners. However, he still thought the board would do something.
