HUNT CLUB RACES

Pakuranga’s Annual Fixture Review of an Interesting Card CONTESTS over the steeplechase course at Ellerslie, easily the most spectacular of all cross-country races in the Dominion, with the hill as the formidable obstacle, are justly popular with Aucklanders. There are two of these events at the Pakuranga Hunt Club’s annual meeting to-morrow, and with one hurdling contest and five races on the flat, the programme promises to be exceedingly interesting. A review of the fields, together with the starting times of the various events, follows.

GREENMOUNT HUNTERS STEEPLES HDCP. of 250 sovs; about 2i miles. At the outset it should be realised that in the events to come up for decision to-morrow there is very little in the way of a guide to the form of the majority of the contestants, and perhaps the best way out of the difficulty is for backers to keep a keen eye on the totalisator. Wiltshire, at the top of the list in this opening event, can negotiate hurdles, and has apparently schooled nicely over the bigger obstacles at Te Rapa. He

is a possibility. Sea Comet and Glenlight too are favoured on the work they have been getting - through, while on this score Hauturu stands a chance. When the bells stop ringing the public may have expressed themselves defintely in favour of WILTSHIRE, SEA COMET AND GLENLIGHT

HUNTERS HURDLES of 250 so vs; 13 : miles A baker’s dozen is quite enough for an event of this j description. Just John won promisingly at the Great | Northern meeting in the same class, and now he litis gone up a couple of stone. Despite the feebleness of the opposition to-morrow, it is probable that the weight will tell the tale. The Taranaki gelding really looks as if he is in need of a race. Ramblin’ Kid was runner-up on the occasion referred to, and he too lias been given a substantial hoist by the handicapper. Fair Abbey has disappointed on more than one occasion, and Lady Acre has been spoken of as a promising hurdler in the south.

Of those further down the list the best would appear to be Town Hall, Royal Bomis and Mangani. It is a difficult race to sum up, and more than likely there will be a surprise. Nevertheless three that will appeal to backers are RAMBLIN’ KID, JUST JOHN and LADY ACRE

SYLVIA PARK HANDICAP of 250 sovs; 11 miles This is a race for horses that have not won beyond seven furlongs, and their form over ten furlongs is likely to present quite a problem. Bright Dawn longs is likely to present quite aproblem. Bright Dawn has been very consistent in his outings, and if he goes well in his preliminary will be well supported. Festina Lente and Killute have been disappointing so far. Red Comet strikes one as a likely horse to see the distance out, for lie has been running on at the end of his races. Blue Sky has been under a cloud, and may not be quite tuned up. Star Comet and Acushla are not greatly fancied, and Athenry, who ran a good race at Te Rapa a little time back, is said to be forward in condition. Captain Cobham has yet to break it for a win, and of those down the list the chances of Charitaine appeal

most. It is even doubtful what will be sent out favourite, and the totalisator in this instance in particular should be studied. It is quite probable is this instance in particular should be studied. It is quite probable that that there will be plenty of money in support of RED COMET, BRIGHT DAWN and KILLUTE

JELLICOE HANDICAP of 500 sovs; I* miles A nice field of a dozen should provide an interesting contest. Te Kara showed at Easter time that he was far from a spent light, and with all his weight he will be conspicuous. Desert Glow is another from the country, and it remains to be seen how he fills the eye. Master Doon is thoroughly seasoned, and this should stand to him. Deliglitment is preferred in the sprint event. Llandudno will no doubt be favourite, and on his running in June he will go a big race. Queen Arch finished second to Nukumai at Trentliam last month in the mile, and so obviously is well. Golden Krist has been working

well, and he may prove the best of the Ellersile contingent. Tinoiti started on her career twelve months ago with a flourish, and from all accounts she is again in good fettle, for her name is being freely mentioned. Thursby, Royal Present, Queen Emerald and Habour View, will all come in for some attention, and of this quartette the last named is fancied. Probably the public will go for GOLDEN KRIST, MASTER DOON and LLANDUDNO

PAKURANGA HUNT CUP of 700 sovs;* about three miles Of the ten engaged here three figure in the opening event, so that should in a measure give a line. Hypothesis won this event a couple of years ago with 9.12, beating Llewellyn by a neck, the latter conceding the winner 421bs. Since then the top weight has shown little form. Pendavies ran a good race when he won the Hunt Cup at the Great Northern meeting, and on that showing promises to be one of the hardest to head off. Stonewall will have his admirers, and Arsene Lupin has the pace if he has the fencing abilities. Syndicate knows the

course, for he ran second to Ngahinepouri at Ellerslie at the spring meeting. Rafferty is in good nick, and so are Sea Comet, and Glenlight. Those mentioned should fight out the finish, and the money will probably be forthcoming to say that the following will be there PENDAVIES, SYNDICATE and RAFFERTY

AUCKLAND HANDICAP Of 225 sovs; 1 mile This has attracted the biggest field of the day, and it is certainly an Ellerslie-sized contest with 23 acceptors. Obviously horses with speed to obtain a good start will be in demand. The top-weight, Catapult, is one of these, and as he ran a couple of fair races at Trentham last month he will be inquired after, which is as it should be. Red Comet is here too, but his prospects are preferred over the distance event. Daddy’s Girl has a disconcerting habit of bobbing up on unexpected occasions; this might be one of them. Rarakau has been off the scene for some ,time, and Slump would go better with the hurdles up. Welkne will bury the field for pace over the early part if desired, and he might keep in the van. Takarunga has some pace, and so too have Charitaine and Cullgie. The remainder are not likely to be fancied, outside of War Officer. This "Warplane gelding looks better than ever, and on appearance will command respect. ITe won a race at Whangarei in the autumn, showing good form to account for Antrim Boy, and a repetition would see him running prominently. To reduce the possibles to a half dozen one would have to include Catapult, Red Comet, Welkne .Acushla, Captain Cobham and War Officer, and then to fine it down still further, the public may be expected to go for this trio: WAR OFFICER, WELKNE and CATAPULT LADIES BRACELET HANDICAP Of 2Qosovs; 14. miles. The amateur riders wifi be called upon for this race, and therefore it behoves backers to put on their considering caps and ascertain what horses are more likely to be handled to the best advantage. This in itself is a problem, and without a knowledge of the riders it seems a hopeless task even to assume what will be best backed. Ramblin’ Kid has quite the best credentials as a performer on the flat, for he raced consistently at Te Rapa a few months back, and a couple of months ago he scored in an amateurs’ race at Hastings, being piloted on that occasion by Mr. J. Morris, quite the best of the gentlemen riders seen in action these days. So that going strictly on form the favourites should be: RAMBLIN' KID, CLOCKWORK and QUINVARDIA DUNEDIN HANDICAP Of 400sovs; 6 furlongs. The majority of those at Ellerslie to-morrow will feel more at home in this case, for most of the performers are well-known to them, and what is more, several of them have recent form. At the top is Eden Hall, and it is expected that the stable will be more optimistic as to the chances of their second string, Le Choucas. Eden Hall has been enjoying a let-up, and even -when in form a middle distance would suit him better. Delightment and King Lu are on the same mark, and as both were winners of sprints at Trentham last month, this should serve to bring them together. Delightment is in great nick, as his sprint at headquarters yesterday showed, and with King Lu kept going since his return from Trentham it should be a keen contest between these two at least. Day Guard may want a race, but Le Choucas had several last month in Australia being beaten by a head in his last two runs. Town Guard galloped well yesterday morning, and he is a horse that comes to hand early. Tinokoa is reported to be in excellent order, and he should be conspicuous. Einelli has not raced for some time, but in Sir Archie there is a possibility, for most will remember how he very nearly pulled off a sprint at Ellerslie in June, King Lu coming through at the end to beat him. Sir Archie appears to have

done a lot of .solid work in the interim. Automne, Desert Knight and Whaka King do not appeal; the first-mentioned has not yet got back to his best iorm. King Lmerald put up smart time on the track yesterday morning and f T 5x, mL if l be considered. There are seven from which to pick and choose vw ith l.k- sui ct A <>f getting a good run. They are Delightment, King Lu Le Chouc.! s. lowii Guard Tinokoa, Sir Archie and King Emerald, and what our ites" m\ y le- 6 tOIS t 0 S ° rt out the dividend payers. The eventual favDELIGHTMENT, KING LU and TOWN GUARD.
