STREET COLLECTIONS
“A STATE OF CHAOS” TOO MANY APPLICATIONS “We are getting into a state of chaos. The public will be up in arms and the collections will be a failure. It is time we called a halt.” ELLEN MELVILLE thus remarked on two applications before the City Council last evening for permission to hold street collections. About six collection days will eventuate during the next two months. One application was from an unemployed organisation, which asked for permission to hold a collection, and suggested that the council might distribute the funds. Cr. Allum said he hoped money distribution would be discouraged. He preferred to see goods given out, though he preferred more to see the money subsidised by the city and work provided. Cr. Knight said no individual applied to the hospital board and was sent away without food Giving money was discouraged. The council was paying the board £ 34,000 a year. The council decided to allow a collection day and to set up a committee of several councillors to confer with the unemployed executive.
