TWO MOTORISTS SERIOUSLY HURT
MIDNIGHT COLLISION IN THE RAIN A collision between a motor-car and a break-down tramcar at the j corner of Eden Street and Anzac Avenue a little before midnight last night resulted in two men, Mr. Herbert Francis Helmling and Mr. Gladstone Mahon being seriously injured. A third occupant of the car escaped unhurt. As the car was turning out of Eder Street, it skidded on the wet surface and was struck by the front of the tram, which was proceeding up Anzac Avenue. The St. John Ambulance was quickly on the scene, and the injured men, who had been wedged ir the car by the force of the impact were released. They were rushed t f the Auckland Hospital. Mr. Helmling who is 35 and lives in Fairview Road Mount Eden, had several ribs broken and Mr. Mahon, of Saltburn Rd., Takapuna, is suffering from a compounc fracture of the right leg and interna injuries. The hospital authoritiej stated this morning that he was stil in a serious condition. The car was badly damaged, the bodj being twisted out of shape and a reai wheel and axle broken. The front pari of the tram was thrown out of alignment, the controls being rendered useless. Heavy rain was falling at the time of the accident.
