Tramway Loan Vetoed

BIG ADVERSE MAJORITY IN CITY Point Chevalier in Favour The proposal of the Auckland City Council to borrow £500,000 for tramway extensions and bus housing was heavily negatived by the city ratepayers at the poll yesterday. Out of 7,784 votes cast, the proposal was defeated by 833. The actual figures were: For the proposal 3,443 Against 4,276 Informal 65 Majority against 833

TOOTING steadily increased in the * afternoon, and though the total number of votes cast represented only 34.8 per cent, of those entitled to vote —who numbered 22,363—the poll was the heaviest yet recorded on an Auckland loan proposal. When the £430,000 waterworks poll was before the ratepayers in 1926 only 3,285 voted out of 19,900. The £710,'000 loans submitted in 1923 and 1924 saw even smaller numbers of voters. City voting in three booths yesterday saw a majority of over 400 against the proposal, while in practicaly all the districts at present served by trams the vote was adverse. Great North Road voted in favour, and the Point Chevalier voters favoured the loan by a considerable majority. The voting at the various booths showed the following figures:

ONUS ON RATEPAYERS “The ratepayers must now accept responsibility for any changes in policy

which may be necessary,” stated the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, to-day. “The people who will be most jubilant to-night will be the most sorry for themselves by the time another is over,” was the opinion of one of the councillors. RECEIVED WITH APPLAUSE The polling concluded at 7 p.m., and the results were known by 8 p.m., though the early returns plainly indicated the probabilities. The results were displayed at most of the entertainments in the city, and were received everywhere with applause.
