N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION
WOMEN’S DIVISION The newly-formed Hamilton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union is progressing favourably. The membership is 28, with prospects of a. big increase in the near future. The president. Mrs. Duxfield. attended the annual conference at Wellington when there were 50 delegates present, representing 40 branches and members. The movement for the amelioration of the conditions of the women and children of the backblocks is being very favourably received. Mrs. Coates (wife of the Prime Minister), opened the conference and was subsequently made a life member. The conference waited on the Prime Minister and received a very favourable and sympathetic hearing. Delegates Were overwhelmed with invitations, among others from the Pioneer Ladies’ Club, a reception at Government House by Their Excellencies Sir Charles and Lady Fergusson, invitations to the leading theatres and picture shows, an afternoon reception at the residence of Mrs. S. Myers, at Kelburn, the Winter Show, and others. They had lectures by Mr. Strong (Director of Education), Dr. Patterson, and Sir J. McLean. Two ladies were appointed by the conference to attend the men’s conference then sitting. The Hamilton branch hopes to arrange for lectures by leading men and women on subjects of interest, and among other tilings, hopes to get the Farmers’ Union rest room in Hood Street re-opened for tiie use of country women.
