COMPASSION NEEDED
Sir, — Is there no compassion in human nature? I refer to the slaughter of new-born calves, a cold-blooded business that should move our citizens to protest. I refer also to the baby whales spoken of by THE SUN’S Look-out Man. When I read a week or so ago how the whale chasers intended waiting for the mothers on their return trip with the babies, involuntarily I exclaimed: “The poor little beggars!” And now the Lookout Man brings the subject up again. It seems unnecessary to say “Of course, the swordfish or sharks will get them!” In my opinion calves should be at least a fortnight old before being killed fo.r human consumption, and whales with their young should be protected until the youngsters are old enough to fend for themselves. This is a humane as well as an economical thing to do. How long will it be before the law enforces this? “COMPASSION.”
